“Glenn Miller is great. His band, of some 46 pieces, is a magnificently competent organisation. Everything about its playing is clean and artistic; the men understand the full meaning of light and shade, and the whole 46 of them can ‘whisper’ as artistically as they can play fortissimo. And the arrangements – but you’ve heard the band on the air, so you’ll know what they’re like.

Not, mind you, that all this any revelation; we have gone well past the days when we gaped at such bands and wondered how on earth the American aces did it; now we know they do, and we are sufficiently familiar with their brand of genius to be able to criticise it.

But let’s start from the beginning. For the benefit of those readers who couldn’t get along, this is what happened.

The curtain rose to disclose a khaki-clad band consisting of five trumpets, four trombones (captain Glenn himself bringing them up to five for certain numbers), six saxes, guitar, piano, bass, drums, French horn, twenty violins and six vocalists.

After the signature tune we had ‘In The Mood’ – you may know the tune!”

  Enzovoort…

Verdwenen

Over het verleden werd medegedeeld: “Glenn Miller first became prominent as trombonist with Ben Pollack. He recorded and arranged with Red Nichols and his Five Pennies, worked with the Dorsey Brothers, Glen Gray, Benny Goodman, Ray Noble etc., forming his own band in March, 1937.

Major Glenn Miller came to this country in July 1944, with the American Band of the A.E.F. [American Expeditionary Force] – forty eight strong, and consisting of one of the finest musical aggravations ever to visit these shores. They have broadcast consistently on the A.E.F. programme of the BBC, given hundreds of troop and charity concerts (including the Jazz Jamboree), and also recorded here for HMV with Dinah Shore.

Their impeccable playing and brilliant musicianship, as well as the polished slickness with which their broadcasts and concerts are carried out, have rocketed Glenn Miller to the peak of British affection – even enhancing the terrific reputation he made over here with his brilliant pre-war orchestra”.

Glenn Miller (midden) 12 december 1944

Over de vermissing kon je die dag lezen: “His last broadcast in person in this country was on December 12, and he left England by air on December 15 to fly to Paris and join the rest of his band, who had already arrived there safely.

Since then there has been complete silence. No news has come from him or the plane in which he was travelling; in fact, he and the machine seem completely to have vanished, and on Christmas eve Shaeff [Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force] issued a short statement – which was broadcast by the BBC in its news bulletin – officially announcing him to be missing”.

Zijn vrouw was op de hoogte gesteld. “Major Miller’s wife in the United States has been informed by the authorities that he is missing, and in her long hours of anxiety and waiting for news she has the deepest sympathy of us all. We can only hope that by the time the next issue of the Melody Maker is printed it will be possible to announce that major Miller has been located – and is safe”.

Voor de rest was het afwachten. Leefde Glenn nog? Was hij ondergedoken of gevangen genomen?

Die vraag viel niet te beantwoorden. “Dance band fans all over the world, and the hundreds of thousands of allied troops who have been cheered and entertained by his music, will learn with the very deepest concern the grave news that major Glenn Miller, celebrated leader of the American band of the allied expeditionary forces, has been officially reported missing”.

Nog geen nieuws

Op 6 januari 1945, opnieuw in Melody Maker: “There is still no news of major Glenn Miller. Dance music circles all over the world have been buzzing with conjecture, and his legion of friends and admirers hope that, even at this eleventh hour, good news will come through of his whereabouts.

We are officially informed, however, that there is still a complete lack of any information that could in anyway cast daylight upon the mysterious fate of Major Miller, whose disappearance on this comparatively short flight across the Channel is one of the strangest occurrences that the Melody Maker has ever had to report”.

De oorlog was nog niet afgelopen. De troepen moesten met muziek opgepept worden. Jerry Gray nam de leiding ‘tijdelijk’ over. “At the moment the band is continuing its concerts to the Allied troops on the Continent under the leadership of ace-arranger Sergeant Jerry Gray, and there is a possibility that the band may be brought back to England to record further programmes for the air before going on its travels again.

Whether the band will return to America or continue under its present leadership in the European sphere of operations has not at the moment been decided”.

Over zijn verleden werd gemeld: “He began studying trombone when he was ten, and after attending the University of Colorado, entered name band circles with a chair in Ben Pollack’s outfit. The leader figures on many early hot jazz discs and a dip into Charles Delaunay’s Discography finds his horn listed with groups like the Original Wolverines, the Mound City Blue Blowers and the Louisiana Rhythm Kings.

After the usual apprenticeship with name bands, he organized his own outfit in 1938 and a year later had reached a popularity peak unsurpassed by any other name bands, winning top honors in the ‘sweet’ division of the annual Down Beat poll in both 1940 and 1941.

He was a remarkable arranger and it was this ability, plus a rare facility for getting the most out of his musicians, that made his band unparalleled for beautiful sax blends (with an unmistakable clarinet-over-saxophones trade-mark) and an unearthly precision that was the result of long, strenuous hours of rehearsal and the despair of other arrangers and leaders”.

In 1942 had Glenn Miller vrijwillig dienst genomen. “Major Miller disbanded his civilian orchestra at the height of its popularity in September of 1942, enlisting in the Air Corps with the rank of captain. It was his job to organize all the Army Air Forces bands, as well as later to play a weekly network radio program with his own service band.

While overseas, he put on air shows over both the AEF and BBC with the same band, which included such music stars as pianist Mel Powell, drummer Ray McKinley and arranger Jerry Gray, the latter also acting as assistant leader”.

Hoop

Downbeat over de vermissing op 15 januari 1945: “A delayed war department report announcing the disappearance of Major Glenn Miller on a plane flight from England to Paris has shaken the entire music world. Details of the incident are still lacking, but the latest report from the war department indicate that Major Miller made the channel crossing in a two-man fighter plane.

Apparently it has yet to be determined whether the plane lost its way and landed in enemy territory, was shot down by enemy aircraft or, as has been suggested as a wildly, remote possibility, was struck by a robomb [vliegende bom, V1, V2]”.

“When Major Miller left for army duty overseas, he left a wife, Helen, and two adopted children behind him”. “Friends of Mrs. Miller are heartened by her confidence that her husband is safe and will return”.

Glenn Miller-dag: 5 juni 1945

“Even though Major Glenn Miller is listed officially as missing in action in U. S. Army Air Force files, he still goes on working in another way to help bring victory und peace to the world.  On June 5 in scores of theaters throughout the country, there will be on observance of ‘Glenn Miller Day’ in conjunction with the sale of war bonds”.

In Downbeat schreef Frank Stacy op 15 mei 1945: “Here in New York City, where the Miller band found its greatest triumphs, the Paramount Theater will be center of activities. At this writing, not all details for the Paramount’s ‘Glenn Miller Day’ are complete but admission to the theater will be through the purchase of war bonds (ranging from $25 to $10,000) where first a military pageant will be held to be followed up with performances by ace name bands and other entertainers from all the fields of stage, screen und radio.

Bands und performers already set to make appearances include Benny Goodman, Xavier Cugat, Count Basie, Guy Lombardo, Louis Prima, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway, Marion Hutton and Perry Como, while a fleck of others not yet determined will also do their bit.

‘Glenn Miller Day’ is not intended to be a day of sorrow – nor a day for elegies. The entire feeling throughout the tribute to Major Miller will be on one of hope – hope that he is alive and well and that word may soon come of his safety”.

4 Glenn Miller salute

“Since the day that the bandleader vanished while flying from England to Paris, there has been no official explanation of the mystery.

Those who knew him well when he was building his first band and fighting tough odds to climb to the top of the name band lists have the feeling that he must turn up.

One close friend, now a well-known bandleader who owes much of his success to Miller’s help, said: ‘If you know Glenn very well, you just can’t believe he’s dead. Nothing could keep him down’.

Over zijn jeugd schreef hij bijvoorbeeld: “His father, Lewis Miller, worked as a carpenter. When Glenn was five, his family, which included another son, moved to a farm in the Nebraska Dust Bowl. Here the Millers lived in a hut of sod with the grassy side of the earth turned outward to protect them against the wind and the rains.

Life was hard. The people of this section were little more than pioneers battling nature to eke out a painful existence. During the cold months, Glenn’s father worked in a town almost 40 miles away and in summer, the Millers lived in constant dread of prairie fires which rose up periodically to destroy their homestead. Their nearest neighbor was four miles away and the family had to endure loneliness as well as the misery of poverty”.

Terugblik op het leven van Glenn Miller

Over zijn  eerste stappen in de muziek: “Alone much of the time, Glenn spent his hours in dreams and a psychologist would probably say that it was out of these forsaken, formative years that there grew the later terrific drive which stamped him as a man who had to succeed.

His mother, Mattie Lou, was his sole, loving companion and it was she who taught him simple melodies out of a hymnal and started him on an early musical education.

In later life, Glenn told an interviewer that it was his mother who encouraged him in his attempts to master the language of music.

‘I almost drove my father nuts practicing trombone’, he said.

5 Glenn Miller jongJeugdige Glenn Miller

After five years of hardship, Glenn’s father was ready to give up wresting a living from the earth and brought his family to North Platte, Nebraska, where he returned to his old trade of carpentry.

Other children were born here und it became necessary for Glenn, though still a youngster, to help out. ‘My first job was milking a cow at $2 per week’, Miller recollected once.

The Millers moved once more before Glenn began studying trombone. This time it was to Grant City, Missouri, where he worked as a butcher’s helper.

Oddly enough, it was through this job that he first found an instrument and took music lessons. The butcher had a beat trombone he no longer cared for. When Glenn discovered it one day and appeared fascinated by the strange sounds it produced, the boss gave it to him and offered to show him how to make it work.

One other story says that Glenn later traded this horn for a new pair of shoes and subsequently earned enough money to buy a brand-new one. Meanwhile, he practiced as much as possible, played in local concerts and in his school bands.

By the time Glenn was ready for high school, his family had migrated again – to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he supported himself by working in a sugar beet factory and at various odd jobs. After graduation, he took his first berth with a band in Laramie, Wyoming.

When the band broke up, he returned home and enrolled at the University of Colorado where he stayed for two years, met his future wife, Helen Dorothy Burger, and kept himself going by working with local bands, one of which was fronted by Boyd Senter and played at the Albany Hotel in Denver.

Glenn had shown a love for football while in high school and, in college, he tried out for the team and developed into an All State left end.

When he left college, Miller headed for the west coast and quickly found jobs with small outfits, eventually winding up in a chair with the Ben Pollack band. This was in 1926/27”.

Vrijwillig in dienst

“Glenn Miller, though his position as a married man and the father of two adopted children placed him in a temporarily draft-exempt position, announced that he was accepting a captain’s rank in the Army Air Corps.

Knowing that his move demanded some public explanation, Glenn made the following statement, in part: ‘I, like every American, have an obligation to fill. That obligation is to lend as much support as I can to winning the war.

It is not enough for me to sit back and buy bonds. I sincerely feel that I owe a debt of gratitude to my country. I am sure that no matter what my career or livelihood would have been, the mere fact that I have had the privilege of exercising the rights to live and work as a free man puts me in the same position of every man in uniform, for it was the freedom and democratic life we have that enabled me to make the strides in the right direction’”.

“The band played its last date at the Adams Theater in Newark to a houseful of crying kids. This was no hokum, no contrived stunt; it was obvious that for these kids who came to the last professional performance of the Glenn Miller band, here was real tragedy. A simple, unpretentious man with a great gift for the music they liked best was leaving them.

Miller himself was strongly affected and members of the band turned away to hide tears. Newspaper people, trying later to describe the scene, found it almost impossible because, while all emotional public events have a touch of the unnatural, here was one that didn’t, though it might when reported in cold print.

A few days later, Glenn reported for duty and, as captain Glenn Miller, was sent eventually to Atlantic City, where he was given the job of building bands for the Army Air Force”.

Over zijn verblijf in Europa tekende Stacy op: “In June 1944, the Miller unit packed its duffel bags and horns for an overseas jaunt. Arriving in London, it knocked out GI cats who hadn’t heard any live, big-time swing since they’d left the States.

Besides playing regular concerts for Yanks abroad (and extremely interested Britishers), the band did a regular series of broadcasts over BBC, some of which were also used for propaganda purposes against the enemy”.

25 december 1944

“Word came through from headquarters that the Miller band was to be sent across the Channel to entertain troops near the front lines and Glenn Miller (now a major) took a trip over to France alone to lay plans for the subsequent arrival of his band. He returned to England as the story is now understood from reliable sources here.

Then, on another flight back to Paris, he disappeared.

Word of the strange flight reached the United States on the day before Christmas, approximately two weeks after major Miller had been reported lost.

The rest of the band, with drummer Ray McKinley acting as leader, went ahead with their orders and reached Paris in time to play a program beamed across the Atlantic to home on Christmas Day.

That major Glenn Miller was not on hand to lead his orchestra on that Christmas Day program was a personal tragedy for millions of music fans throughout the world.

That he will return to safety and to the music he loved is the hope of millions of Glenn Miller music lovers who will take part in the ceremonies on June 5 – ‘Glenn Miller day’”.

“In the event that Major Glenn Miller, reported missing in action over the European front for several months, fails to return, a group of musicians and leaders in music business are planning to establish a ‘living memorial’ to the bandleader in Hollywood.

The plan is to found a ‘Miller Music Institute’, a training center for young musicians consisting of rehearsal halls, practice studios, and teachers who will aid young and promising musicians to get ahead in the music field with ‘Miller scholarships’”.

Nederland

‘Kalamazoo’, I Know Why’ en ‘At Last’.

The Flying American Band of the Supreme Allied Command’.
