Bij die gelegenheid schreef een journalist van vakblad Cashbox: “For twelve years Miller was soloist with the CBS Symphony, during which time he gave premieres of important compositions for solo oboe.
He has made many records for leading record companies and his direction of popular music for Mercury has earned him an enviable reputation in the ‘pop’ field. He produced scores of top selling records for that company including ‘Mule Train’, ‘Lucky Old Sun’ and ‘Again’. He is credited with developing the recording techniques of such artists as Frankie Laine and Vic Damone”.
Frank Sinatra

Bij het uitkomen van hun eerste nieuwe single, kon je in Cashbox lezen: “Frankie Laine’s first disk on the Columbia label is a smash. One of the most unusual in Frankie’s long line of unusual disks, ‘Jezebel’ is bound to sweep the country with the dynamic interpretation it gets here.
The side reunites the singer with Mitch Miller and these two have together turned out some of the greatest moneymakers in recent years. Mitch did the arrangement and the backing on this one and his stamp stands out all over it. With Frankie turning in one of his most inspired vocals, the excitement of this piece can’t help but be contagious”.
Cernick was songplugger.

Artikel in Time magazine
In just 18 months, his guesses and general savvy have upped Columbia’s pop record sales more than 60%, pushed Columbia’s label high on bestseller lists. Last week’s Variety rating: of the top ten recordings listed, five were Columbia’s. Miller picks the tunes, picks the singers to record them”.
Muziekuitgevers mochten bij hem op audiëntie komen. “Into Miller’s mid-Manhattan office three days a week troop 40 or 50 professionally bright-eyed song publishers, each with a few tunes for Miller’s examination. If he likes a song, it’s in”.
Over zijn ontdekkingen: “Every singer has certain sounds he makes better than others. Frankie Laine is sweat and hard words – he’s a guy beating the pillow, a purveyor of basic emotions. Guy Mitchell is better with happy-go-lucky songs; he’s a virile young singer, gives people a vicarious lift. Clooney is a barrelhouse dame, a hillbilly at heart”.
Rosemary Clooney was op dat moment succesvol met ‘Come on-a My House’.
Rosemary Clooney
“I wouldn’t buy that stuff for myself. There’s no real artistic satisfaction in this job”.
Miller was duidelijk: “Musical snobbishness is one of the curses of the music business. Many of the most eloquent things have been said very simply and the simple things are the hardest things to say well. And yet at times people will confuse simplicity for lack of talent and lack of knowledge, and, conversely, will think that because something is complicated, it therefore has to be good”.
“There are times when great jazz musicians like Harry James make records that you believe in, and nothing happens. For example, I recorded Harry James’ ‘Tango Blues’. I thought it was sensational, and to prove that I wasn’t kidding myself I placed it against hits of the past few years and they made it seem ridiculous.
Yet it came out and we sold only 50 or 60 thousand on it and I must add that was a little disheartening, especially since it sounded like a very commercial record and got played a lot on the air. I guess the kids just weren’t buying anything like that”.
Een les om niet te vergeten.
Mitch Miller in Nederland

“Youth is being served at Columbia Records these days. First, Mitch Miller, the diskery’s artists and repertoire chief, released Jo Stafford’s ‘Young and Foolish’ and then Rosemary Clooney’s ‘Love Among the Young’.
Now the label is recording bunches of actual live youngsters. First, Miller signed up Detroit’s well-known ‘Make Way for Youth’ Chorus, and most recently he recorded two full bus loads of Chappagqua (N. Y.) High School Kids. The Detroit group, long-time favorites on WJR, Detroit’s CBS affiliate, are conducted by Don Large.
The Chappaqua Kids, from New York’s suburban Westchester County, were organized and are conducted by Jimmy Leyden”.
“I find that my taste in music and the taste of the British public seem to harmonise on most things. And there are reasons why I think this is true. First of all, the British are not quite in so much a hurry as we Americans are. They take time out to really listen. For them music isn’t just a background for talk, or bowling, or dancing, or ice-cream sodas, the way it is in this country. Music, to the British, is something to be really listened to, to study; analyse”.
“This business can be a very discouraging one. You put your heart and head into what you think is a good tune. You think, and work out just how you think it can best be presented. Then – flop! Nothing! Somehow in all the hullaballoo of the hundreds of records being issued all of the time, your tune escapes; no one notices it”.
1957
Journalist Ren Grevatt noemde hem desondanks nog steeds ‘the man who makes the stars’.
“We figure on losing this group completely with our records. Later on, the kids develop taste, and we welcome them back in the fold. The ones with a certain amount of taste for quality, even in the teen years, are the ones who will someday become buyers of our albums”.
Miller noemde het bekende rijtje artiesten, aangevuld met Johnnie Ray, Four Lads, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett en Doris Day. Grevatt: “Everyone of Miller’s artists, though they may not always make the leading trade best-selling charts, are consistent sellers. Each one had a story to tell, each one had a sound and none had any illiterate rock ’n’ roll sounds”.
Miller had weer eens flink toegeslagen met Doris Day. “A year ago, when Doris Day was widely rumoured to be going to another label, Miller resigned her and forthwith cut ‘Que Sera Sera’, another million seller smash”.

‘Rock & Roll is bijna fascisme’
Grevatt: “Miller’s distaste for the rock ’n’ roll idiom borders on outright revulsion, not only because it’s what he has called ‘know nothingism’ in music, but for sociological and political reasons as well”.
Aan de journalist vertelde hij: “Rock ’n roll becomes almost a credo among a certain element of juveniles. “They accept almost any form of it, even the lowest and most distasteful without question because everybody else in their group does. It’s the thing to do. It seems to encourage sloppy clothes that become the accepted uniform. The kids take it all without discrimination. It’s one step from fascism”.
Miller zette zich vooral af tegen Elvis Presley. “As a prime example of the cultist tendency, he singles out Presley, whom he dismisses as ‘a three ring circus’”.
“Our newest star, like Frankie Laine, Johnnie Ray, Guy Mitchell, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney and the rest, I think will one day be very big in England. That’s Johnny Mathis. He’s had three hits here – ‘Wonderful, Wonderful’, ‘It’s not for me to say’ and ‘Chances Are’. And I think he has a style that’s bound to catch on in England.
Mathis took six months to make his first record a hit here. But he has had three in a row now, and I predict he’ll be around both here and abroad for a lot longer than the overnight sensations”.

Jazz
“In his new role he will make the records of men like Errol Garner and Dave Brubeck”.
“We hope to make more people than ever followers of jazz”.
Over Dave Brubeck zei hij in 1957: “He has developed a relatively mass audience for his work. Unfortunately, when a jazz artist becomes really accepted, a lot of the strictly jazz-oriented critics and fans tend to say he’s lost his drive as a creative jazz force. We feel that just as jazz is good for the few, it’s good for the masses”.

Vrouwelijke rockers
“There are few girl rock ’n’ roll singers”. The bulk of the teenage buyers are girls. They’re not interested in girl singers. And even if there were, I don’t think many girl buyers would want to identify themselves with a girl showing herself off to a disadvantage with those ridiculous rock ’n’ roll songs”.
Most of the pop song publishers have offices within clear view of Miller’s Seventh Avenue haven. That’s why his office is permanently curtained with deep, thick drapes. He doesn’t want anybody looking in the window, when his secretary says he’s in conference!”

Op 30 januari 1961 publiceerde Billboard het artikel ‘Mitch Miller on march to still more victories’. Daarin werd gesteld: “Ten years ago, Mitch Miller was the king of the singles field. Now, a decade later, Mitch Miller is not only one of the kings of the album field, with 10 best selling ‘Sing Along albums’ but also the proud proprietor of a brand-new ‘Sing Along’ TV series.
It is hard to remember that the genial, amiable Mitch of today, leading his gang in old sweet songs and cavorting with kids on TV, is the same Mitch who set the entire music industry on its ear back in the early ’50s. At that time Mitch was considered by many recording executives and music publishers to be an arch-revolutionary, destroying the business with wild sounds, French horns, swinging harpsichords, ‘bad’ songs and singers who couldn’t sing. In the days prior to rock and roll it was Mitch who was accused of ‘wrecking the pop record business’”.
Het artikel eindigde als volgt: “In August 1958, Mitch issued his first ‘Sing Along’ album. The tunes – all fine standards and public domain items – were sung in a casual manner by a pleasantly professional male vocal group and the words to the tunes were printed on sheets enclosed in the album envelope. The album took off like a startled rabbit, and the ‘Sing Along’ albums have taken off ever since, building into one of the hottest series in the history of the record business. Mitch claims that through store and rack sales, and club sales, his 10 Sing Along Albums have racked up sales totaling over four millions. This means that Mitch’s albums alone have grossed close to $20 million.
Mitch is still recording artists both on singles and albums, and still issuing singles of his marching band as well.
Mitch gave up his post as pop chief last September [1960], and Frank DeVol took over as pop singles and album chief. But Mitch is still recording a roster of single and album artists and occasionally issuing singles with his marching band. His interests now, appear to lie mainly with his ‘Sing Along Gang’, his new TV show, his booming album sales and home and family.
